WEEK IN REVIEW: ashton offends, rascals serenade, and lionel does vegas!

{photo credit: people.com}
the ACMs were so fiercely publicized by CBS that i suppose i'm not that surprised that i was a tad underwhelmed by the evening. of course, carrie underwood was hot as hell, i mistook gorgeous faith hill for giselle bundchen, and miranda looked extraordinarily fabulous. but other than that, i'd say the highlight was brad paisley coming out wearing the same beanie as zac brown. (if you don't know what i'm talking about, google the zac brown band to see that he is NEVER beanieless!) apparently the real highlight though was ashton kutcher offending the likes of miranda lambert and justin moore with his presentation of the best female vocalist award. i'm suprised at this! i loved it, and thought it was adorable! he's a big country music fan and he was paying homage to the great george strait with his little song and getup. and why oh why would he make fun of country at the ACMs, where he is surrounded by the beefy likes of jason aldean and eric church? it don't make no sense people! we all know miranda's not a fan of womanizers, so perhaps anything ashton did would have rubbed her the wrong way.

dancing with the stars said goodbye to jack wagner from the bold and the beautiful this week (i have yet to make the phonecall to my mother), and there to give him the musical warning were none other than rascal flatts, singing here comes goodbye while julianne hough (aka ryan seacrest's beard girlfriend) returned to the show for a dance. pretty snazzy stuff!

lionel richie continues the media blitz for his new record tuskegee with a huge lionel richie and friends concert in vegas. filmed the night after the ACMs, it will air on--you guessed it--CBS this friday the 13th. have a great rest of the week my lovelies!

my guitar heroes: BRAD PAISLEY and KEITH URBAN.

so one of the things that turned me on to country music is how damn nice everyone is! you hardly hear stories about celebrity feuds, divas, and showing up three hours late to your own concert--if you show up at all--just because you can. and country artists are so friendly and supportive of each other as well as their fans. in fact, i have two such AMAZING stories for you, courtesy of my guitar heroes, brad paisley and keith urban. both are being utter darlings and going above and beyond to make fans' wishes come true.

brad paisley helps fan propose to his girlfriend in the front row!

at about 2:45, brad's taking a solo during his performance of his wedding-song-grade ballad she's everything. you see him grab an iphone from someone in the front row and point down at one of his fans.  what is he doing, you ask? he's cuing up a fan in the front row to take the mic and propose to his girlfriend while brad stops the entire show to play camera guy to this once-in-a-lifetime moment in his fan's life! he even does the obligatory "i think i got it" disclaimer as he hands the iphone back. see!? they're real people, just like you and me! you can't say that about all genres.

i remember years and years ago, i was dating a guy who had a lot of friends in "bands" (trust me, quotation marks are necessary), and he asked one of them to say happy birthday to me while on stage (oh whateva, we were freshmen in college). all i got was an "oh-yeah-and-happy-birthday-annie!" in between verses. wtf do i do with that!? anyway, i suppose i was touched at the time, but gag with me a spoon when compared to THIS. more details about brad's lovely gesture--and cute banter--are here. I. LOVE. HIM.

keith urban performs "long hot summer" cover with two lucky fans.
my dreamboat-and-a-half keith urban has been out of the game for awhile recovering from throat surgery. in the meantime (i think it was in the meantime. and if so, then it's pr genius), he had a youtube contest for best cover of what is now my favorite song to blast in the car while driving above the speed limit, long hot summer. he selected the winners himself and then flew them out to nashville to perform it with him.

and umm, did you notice another heartthrob up on stage with keith? richard marx! remember that guy? ("wherever you go, whatever you do, i will be right here waiting for youuu." swoon.) anyway i smiled the whole time as my love for this enigmatic australian ken doll grew exponentially.

it's stuff like this, yall. stuff like this.

paisley.

{cmt.com}

so brad paisley's adorable. and he always wears a cowboy hat to downplay his even more adorable dumbo ears. i thought he was just one of the cute young southern boys on the radio these days, but he's kind of a big deal. he's had 16 singles reach #1 on the billboard hot country chart (my favorite is probably "he didn't have to be" despite the cheese--i mean, that's kind of the whole point). i'm trying to get over the goofiness of "online," which, if i'm successful, will probably be #2. and while "i'm still a guy" makes me smile, the pretty macho/borderline homophobic lyrics make me a little nervous. after all, west hollywood is right in my backyard.

he's won something like a million awards since his debut in 1999, including the acm for male vocalist of the year EVERY year since 2007! is that even allowed!? who is he, oprah?? he's also an unbelievable guitarist and perhaps BEST OF ALL, i think every guitar of his i've seen has a paisley finish. get it? like his last name!? come on, that's adorable.

in fact, one of his latest singles, "this is country music" should really be the theme song for this blog. take a listen. it's the best explanation for why country music is amazing.
